Savory Sheppard's Pie KETO LOW CARB! Yummy!

In this episode, we are going to make Sheppard's Pie. It's going to be a savory pie-like version of meat, veggies, and mashed potato. But, we're going to do it keto/low carb style. Like real G's do. So, we are going to cut the potatoes and use cauliflower mashed. My personal favorite vegetable. Cauliflower flower power pow-pow.


This savory pie originated from the United Kingdom. Also, called Cottage Pie. Usually cooked with peas, celery, and carrots. But because we are going for lower carbs we didn't add those in. There is also a Sheppardless Pie. which is a vegetarian version of the Sheppard's Pie. Made without meat and dairy.

Ingredients List

Mashed Cauliflower

1/2 Head Cauliflower

4 tbsp unsalted butter

4 ounces cream cheese

1/2 tsp salt


1.5 lbs 80/20 ground Beef

8 oz baby portabella Mushrooms

2/3 medium-size red onion

4 minced cloves of garlic

2 tbsp unsalted butter

1 tbsp avocado oil

8 oz tomato sauce

Seasoning

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp paprika

1/2 tsp cajun seasoning

1/2 tsp chili powder

1/4 tsp ground cumin

1/2 tsp ground garlic powder

PInch of black pepper

PInch of white pepper


Mashed Cauliflower

In a pot with an inch of water, add in cauliflower florets. Steam until tender and mushy. Like, mashed potato consistency. It takes the cauliflower about 15 to 20 minutes to get to the right texture. When done, strain the water out of the cauliflower. Put Cauliflower into a big bowl. Add in 4 tbsp unsalted butter and 4 ounces of room temperature cream cheese. Then, add in 1/2 tsp of salt. If you like it saltier you may add more. Use a spoon or something to mash and mix the cauliflower into mashed potato consistency.


Saute Veggies

In a frying pan, add 1 tbsp butter and 1 tbsp avocado oil. Infuse butter and oil with minced garlic. Cook garlic until golden brown. Add in chopped red onions or onion of your choice. Add another tbsp of butter. When the onions are caramelized and tender we may add in our mushrooms.


Brown Ground Beef

In another frying pan. Turn heat on high. When the pan is hot add in 1.5 lbs ground beef. The ground beef is 80%lean and 20% fatty. You don't need to add oil because it's already fatty enough. Unless you have ground beef that is leaner. Cook until brown and fully cooked.


When ground beef is done. Add in the cooked onions, garlic, and mushrooms. Then, add in 8 ounces of tomato sauce. You can add more if you want more tomato sauce flavor. Finally, add in the seasoning. 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp paprika, 1/2 tsp cajun seasoning, 1/2 tsp chili powder, 1/4 tsp ground cumin, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, a pinch of black pepper, a pinch of white pepper. Mix all up.


Sheppard's Pie

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. This recipe creates a lot. Probably 8 or more servings. I needed two casserole dishes for the amount in this recipe. Using the casserole dish, make one layer of the meat, onions, mushrooms, and garlic. And, mashed cauliflower for the top layer. Sprinkle about a cup of shredded cheese on top. I used Mexican four cheese. You can use any cheese you like. Bake in the oven for about 20 until the cheese is melted and golden. When done, let sit for about 15 minutes. Serve and enjoy.
